Spurgeon's Prayer: Conquering Self

No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
— 1 Corinthians 9:27 (BSB)

We must conquer ourselves, or self will surely conquer us.
— Charles Spurgeon

Father, we come to You this morning, seeking victory over the desires of the flesh. We know that without Your strength, we are weak and prone to failure. Help us to discipline our bodies and keep them under control. May no base appetite prevail against the Spirit within us. We desire to live lives that honor You, and we ask for the strength to conquer self.

Lord, grant us patience in the face of pain and suffering. We know that trials will come, but we ask that You help us to trust You fully, knowing that nothing can harm our inner man. Strengthen our spirits so that we may endure with grace and faith.

Above all, we ask that You help us to live for Your glory and the good of others. Just as Christ lived not for Himself, but for the sake of others, may we also seek to serve and bless those around us. Let our lives reflect the sacrificial love of Christ, and may we be content to lose ourselves in serving others for Your sake.

Father, we know that conquering self is a daily battle, but we trust in Your grace to give us the victory. Help us to live as those who are completely surrendered to You, and may every part of our lives be under the dominion of Your Spirit. We ask all of this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
