Spurgeon's Prayer: The Confession of Faith
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
— 1 John 1:9 (BSB)
Learn this lesson—not to trust Christ because you repent, but trust Christ to make you repent; not to come to Him because you are healed, but to come to Him to be healed.
— Charles Spurgeon
Lord, we come before You today with hearts humbled and broken over our sin. We confess that we are by nature lost, and by practice, we are ruined. We acknowledge that all our righteousness is as filthy rags before You. If You were to count our sins against us, we would have no hope, but we thank You that through Christ, we can come to You with confidence, knowing that Your mercy is greater than our sin.
We look up to You now, dear Savior. We confess that we have no merit of our own and no righteousness to stand on. We have nothing to offer but our need. But we thank You that at the cross, You bore our sin and shame. We look to You as our sin-bearer and sin-destroyer. In Your life, death, and resurrection, we find all that we need. Our hope is in You alone.
We ask that You would renew our faith today. Help us to fix our gaze on Your substitutionary sacrifice, where all our hope lies. We trust in Your finished work, and we rest in the assurance that our salvation is secure in You.
Let this day be a new beginning. If we have strayed or grown cold in our faith, we return to You now, beginning again at the foot of the cross. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and lead us in the way of righteousness. Amen.
