Spurgeon's Prayer: Pursuing Holiness and Christlikeness
for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
— 1 Peter 1:16 (BSB)
To live in the Spirit is to walk in the Spirit; to walk in the Spirit is to be conformed in heart and soul to the will and likeness of Christ.
— Charles Spurgeon
Holy Father, we come before You with a deep desire for purity and holiness. We long for everything in our lives to help us toward purity, for we crave holiness. We ask that You would cleanse us in spirit, soul, and body, making us fit temples for Your indwelling. As You are holy, so we desire to be. Help us to pursue holiness in every part of our lives, not just outwardly but in the deepest parts of our hearts.
Lord, we ask that You would make us more like Christ. If we are to be men and women of sorrows, may we have the same patience and holy submission to Your will that He had. In our daily lives, may our activity reflect His, for He "went about doing good." Give us the same zeal to seek the good of others and the glory of God in everything we do. We desire to walk as Christ walked, full of love, humility, and obedience.
Father, fill us with sacred warmth, that the zeal for Your house would consume us. Touch our lips with the live coal, so that there would be a perpetual fire within us, and we would be living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to You. May our lives be filled with the fire of the Spirit, so that others may see Your light and glorify You.
As we go through this day, let our lives be a testimony to the holiness and love of Christ. May we reflect His character in all we do, seeking to bring glory to Your name and good to those around us. Amen.
