O my dove in the clefts of the rock, in the crevices of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your countenance is lovely. — Song 2:14 BSB
Jesus is the hiding place—the only true hiding place from sin and from self. David declared, "You are my hiding place." This was illustrated for Moses when the Lord placed him in the cleft of a rock, which Toplady so beautifully expressed in his hymn:
"Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee!"
This "Rock of Ages" is the foundation upon which God has built His Church. As a rock, Christ is both deep and high—so deep that He reaches below the very depths of the fall, and so high that He is God’s equal, seated at His right hand. Christ is also broad and long—broad enough to support millions of living stones built upon Him, and long enough to stretch from eternity to eternity. This is why the Apostle prays that the Church at Ephesus, along with all the saints, may comprehend "the breadth and length, and depth and height," and know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.
