Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, — Eph 3:20 BSB
It’s comforting to know that when we pray, God is able to do more than we ask.
Paul tells us that God can do “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.” This doesn’t mean He will always give us exactly what we ask for. Sometimes we ask for things that aren’t good for us, thinking they will satisfy us or fill a need, but they might actually harm us.
God, in His wisdom and love, won’t give us those things, no matter how earnestly we ask.
We might pray for a burden to be lifted or for a coming trouble to be averted. God is certainly able to do it, but His love for us might require that we bear the burden or endure the sorrow.
We can be sure that God is able to do anything we ask, but if He doesn’t, it’s because not doing it is better for us.
