And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. — 1 Tim 1:14 BSB
Someone once said that the greatest wonder of divine grace was that he himself had been saved. Paul seems to have felt the same amazement about himself. He had been a blasphemer and persecutor, yet Christ chose him for His service. This shows the abundance of Christ’s grace.
Paul also explained why he had been shown mercy: “I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His immense patience as an example for those who would believe in Him.” In other words, Paul’s forgiveness was to show that no sinner is beyond hope. If Paul, after all he had done against Christ, could be forgiven, anyone can be forgiven. Christ saved the worst of sinners so that others might have confidence when seeking mercy. Each one of us should also marvel at being saved, for none of us is worthy.
