As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. — Matt 3:16 BSB
The image of the dove descending on Jesus after His baptism carries rich symbolism. The dove holds tender associations in Scripture. It was the offering allowed for the poor, a symbol of peace when it brought the olive leaf to Noah after the flood, and an emblem of gentleness and innocence. It was also a sign of the coming of spring, bringing new life.
Thus, the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus in the form of a dove was a perfect symbol of His mission. Jesus came to offer peace to all, even the poorest. He came to bring new life to a world lost in sin, and His life would be marked by gentleness and harmlessness. The dove, as a sign of the Holy Spirit, reminds us that Jesus’ ministry was one of peace, hope, and love for everyone, no matter their condition.
