Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval. — John 6:27 BSB

Bunyan describes a man with a rake, working hard, scraping up the dirt beneath his feet, not noticing the crown hanging in the air above him.

This is a picture of many people today. They toil and exhaust themselves, gathering up the trash of this world, without thinking about the spiritual treasures in Christ, which they could have with much less effort.

“Bubbles we buy with a whole soul’s tasking;
‘Tis heaven alone that is given away,
‘Tis only God may be had for the asking.”

We shouldn’t spend our lives picking up things we can’t take with us beyond the grave. If we’re wise, we’ll seek treasures we can carry with us into eternity. When we welcome Christ into our hearts, we receive the bread that endures to eternal life.
