For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. — John 6:33 BSB
Nothing that comes from the earth can feed our souls.
We were made for God, and only heavenly bread can satisfy our spiritual hunger. There’s a story of a pilgrim crossing the desert, starving for bread, who found a bag of pearls lying in the sand. He hoped it contained food, but when he opened it, he threw it aside in bitter disappointment, saying, “It’s only pearls, and I’m starving for bread.”
The riches and honors of this world are like those pearls to a starving person—they’re a bitter mockery. They can’t satisfy the deep needs of a human soul, especially in times of sin or sorrow. Only bread can satisfy hunger, and only Christ can meet the deepest needs of a soul in distress.
“Are you weary, are you burdened,
Are you sorely distressed?
‘Come to Me,’ says One, ‘and coming, be at rest.’”
