Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you. — 1 Pet 4:12 BSB

Many expect sunny skies and calm seas after taking a step of faith, but when storms arise, they are perplexed. Yet, this is exactly what we should anticipate if we have received something from the Lord. The best evidence of His presence is the adversary’s opposition. The more real our blessing, the more likely it will be challenged. It’s wise to prepare for difficulties so we aren’t surprised when they come. If our path is smooth and unopposed, we can rejoice all the more for the unexpected ease.

It’s important to understand temptation. You who have died to self and sin may be startled by a flood of thoughts and feelings that seem to come from within. You might think, "I thought I was dead to sin, but I feel so alive to it." This is the moment to remember that temptation is not sin; it is the work of the evil one.
