But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, — Gal 5:22 BSB

Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit. It is simply being like God—Godness. And God-like goodness particularly refers to His active benevolence. The apostle makes a distinction between goodness and righteousness in Romans when he says, “Scarcely for a righteous man would one die, but perhaps for a good man, someone might even dare to die.” A righteous man is upright and inflexible, but he may also be hard, like a granite mountain. A good man is like that same mountain, but covered with velvet moss, flowers, and springs. Goodness speaks of everything that is lovely—kindness, affection, benevolence, sympathy, rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep.

Lord, fill us with Yourself. Let us be God-men, filled with goodness to represent You on this earth.

There are lonely hearts to cherish
While the days are going by;
There are weary souls who perish
While the days are going by.
