Victory Without Battle

Yet I will have compassion on the house of Judah, and I will save them—not by bow or sword or war, not by horses and cavalry, but by the LORD their God. — Hos 1:7 BSB

What a precious promise! Jehovah Himself will deliver His people in the greatness of His mercy, but He often does it in unexpected ways. People are slow to give God the glory He deserves. When they go into battle with sword and bow and win, they should give God the praise, but instead, they often credit their own strength and boast in their horses and horsemen. For this reason, our God often chooses to save His people without using ordinary means, so that all the glory goes to Him alone.

So, my heart, look only to the Lord, not to human help. Expect to see God’s hand more clearly when there is no one else to rely on. If I have no friend, no advisor, no one to support me, I should still feel confident, knowing that the Lord is on my side. In fact, I should rejoice if He brings victory without a fight, as this verse suggests. Why should I ask for horses and horsemen if the Lord Himself has mercy on me and raises His arm to defend me? Why would I need a sword or bow if God will save me? From now on, let me trust Him and not be afraid, now and forever. Amen.
