Immortal Till Work Done
I will not die, but I will live and proclaim what the LORD has done. — Ps 118:17 BSB
What a beautiful assurance! It was likely based on a promise quietly whispered into the psalmist’s heart, which he seized upon with joy. Is my situation similar to David’s? Am I discouraged because the enemy taunts me? Do I face multitudes against me with only a few on my side? Does doubt tell me to give up, lie down, and die in defeat and dishonor? Do my enemies already begin to prepare my grave?
What should I do then? Should I give in to fear and surrender the battle, giving up all hope with it? Absolutely not! There is still life in me: “I shall not die.” Strength will return, and my weakness will be replaced with renewed vigor: “I shall live.” The Lord is alive, and because He lives, I will live too. My mouth will open again: “I will declare the works of the Lord.” I will speak of my present trouble as another testimony of the faithfulness and love of the Lord my God. Those who are preparing to measure me for my coffin had better wait a little longer, for “the Lord has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death.” Praise His name forever! I am immortal until my work is done. No grave can hold me until the Lord wills it.
