The Name to Use
If you ask Me for anything in My name, I will do it. — John 14:14 BSB
What a generous promise! Anything! Whether large or small, all our needs are included in this word. Come, my soul, approach the throne of grace with boldness and hear your Lord say, “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.”
What a wise promise! We are to ask in the name of Jesus. While this encourages us, it also honors Him. His name is a constant plea. At times, all other arguments seem darkened—whether based on our relationship with God or our experience of His grace. But in those moments, the name of Jesus remains powerful at the throne of God, and we can use it with full confidence.
What an instructive prayer! I cannot ask for anything that I cannot confidently place under Christ’s seal and name. I dare not use His name for selfish or sinful desires. I can only use His name for prayers He would Himself pray if He were in my situation. It is a great privilege to ask in the name of Jesus, as though He were asking Himself, but our love for Him will keep us from placing His name where He would not.
Am I asking for something that Jesus approves of? Can I place His seal on my prayer? If so, I will receive what I ask from the Father.
