The Unfailing Watch

Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. — Ps 121:4 BSB

Jehovah is “the Keeper of Israel.” He never falls asleep—not for a moment or even in a light slumber. He constantly watches over the hearts and homes of His people. This is why we can rest in perfect peace. Alexander the Great once said he could sleep peacefully because his friend Parmenio was watching over him. How much more can we rest, knowing that our God is our guard?

The word “behold” in this verse calls our attention to this comforting truth. When Israel used a stone as a pillow, he fell asleep, but his God remained awake and appeared to him in a vision. Likewise, when we lie down defenseless, Jehovah Himself covers our head.

The Lord guards His people as a wealthy man guards his treasure, as a captain guards a city with a garrison, or as a sentry keeps watch over his king. No harm can come to those under such divine protection. Let me place my soul in His loving hands. He never forgets, never ceases to care, and never fails to preserve us.

O my Lord, keep me from wandering, falling, or perishing. Keep me that I may keep Your commandments. By Your constant care, keep me from falling asleep in complacency and perishing like those who sleep the sleep of death.
