The Lord's Free Men

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. — Rom 6:14 BSB

Sin will rule if it can; it won’t settle for anything less than the throne of the heart. Sometimes we fear that it will overpower us, and in those moments, we cry out to the Lord, “Let not any sin have dominion over me.” And His comforting response is, “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” Sin may attack and even wound us, but it will never be able to establish its rule over us.

If we were still under the law, sin would gain strength and hold us captive. Being under the law makes a man fall further under sin’s power. But because we live under the covenant of grace, we are kept from departing from God. Through grace, we are restored when we stray, cleansed from our impurities, and freed from sinful habits.

If we were slaves trying to earn eternal life, we would be in despair and would resign ourselves to sin’s power, “content to serve the Egyptians.” But since we are the Lord’s free men, we take courage in fighting our sins and temptations, knowing that sin will never rule over us again. God gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen.
