A Shepherd Secures Them

The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies, nor will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. But they will feed and lie down, with no one to make them tremble. — Zeph 3:13 BSB

Yesterday, we reflected on the afflicted and poor people whom God has left as a living remnant in a dead world. The prophet says that these people will not commit sin or speak lies. Though they have no wealth or status to protect them, they also don’t rely on the sinful tactics the wicked use. They can’t defend themselves with deceit or manipulation.

But does that mean they will be destroyed? No, absolutely not! They will both eat and rest, and not only be safe but live without fear of evil. Sheep are weak creatures, and wolves are fierce enemies; yet even now, sheep far outnumber wolves, and their cause is winning while the wolves’ numbers decline. One day, the plains will be filled with flocks of sheep, and not a single wolf will remain. The reason is simple: sheep have a Shepherd who provides, protects, and gives them peace. “None”—meaning not one, human or otherwise—“shall make them afraid.” Who can terrify the Lord’s flock when He is near? We rest in green pastures because Jesus is both food and rest for our souls.
