Christian Liberality
Blessed is the one who cares for the poor; the LORD will deliver him in the day of trouble. — Ps 41:1 BSB
Thinking about the poor and carrying them in our hearts is a Christian duty because Jesus placed them near us when He said, “The poor you will always have with you.”
Many people give money to the poor hurriedly, without much thought; many others give nothing at all. This precious promise belongs to those who “consider” the poor, who take the time to understand their situation, devise plans to help them, and thoughtfully put those plans into action. We can accomplish more with care than with cash alone, but the combination of both is even more effective. To those who consider the poor, the Lord promises His own consideration in times of distress. He will deliver us from trouble if we help others when they are in trouble. We will receive special providential help if the Lord sees that we are trying to provide for others. We will face times of trouble, no matter how generous we are, but if we are charitable, we can claim the promise of unique deliverance, and the Lord will not break His word. Those who are stingy can fend for themselves, but the Lord will help considerate and generous believers. As you have done for others, the Lord will do for you. Open your heart and your hands.
