Divine Recompense

A generous soul will prosper, and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. — Prov 11:25 BSB

If I take the time to consider others, God will take the time to consider me, and in His own way, He will repay my kindness. When I care for the poor, the Lord will care for me. When I look after little children, the Lord will treat me as His own child. When I feed His flock, He will make sure I am fed. When I water His garden, He will turn my soul into a well-watered garden. This is the Lord’s promise, and it’s up to me to fulfill the condition and then trust that He will keep His word.

I could focus so much on myself that I become inwardly sick; I could monitor my own feelings so closely that I become numb; I could dwell on my own weaknesses until I’m too weak to even lament them. But it would be far more beneficial for me to be unselfish and, out of love for my Lord Jesus, begin to care for the souls around me. My tank feels almost empty; there’s no fresh rain to fill it up. What should I do? I’ll pull out the plug and let the water flow to refresh the withering plants around me. What’s this? My cistern seems to fill up as it pours out. There’s a secret spring at work. While everything was stagnant, the fresh spring remained sealed; but as my resources flow out to help others, the Lord remembers me. Hallelujah!
