Spurgeon's Prayer: Returning to the Cross
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
— Matthew 11:28 (BSB)
Nothing teaches us about the preciousness of the Creator as much as when we learn the emptiness of everything else.
— Charles Spurgeon
Heavenly Father, as we come to the close of this day, we return to the foot of the cross. We thank You for the invitation to come to You, no matter how weary or burdened we feel. You promise to give rest, and tonight we place our burdens at Your feet. Lord, we confess that the pressures and anxieties of life have weighed heavily on our hearts, but we thank You that we can find peace and relief in You.
As we reflect on this day, we come with a heart of repentance. There are moments when we strayed, when we chose our way over Yours. We return to You now, asking for Your forgiveness and grace. Help us to begin again, resting in Your mercy and trusting in the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice.
Lord, we are grateful that Your invitation to come to You never expires. No matter how far we wander or how burdened we feel, You always welcome us back with open arms. We thank You for Your love, for the rest that comes from being in Your presence. Tonight, as we prepare for sleep, help us to cast every care upon You, trusting that You will carry us through the night and into a new day.
We praise You for the cross, where all our burdens are lifted and all our sins forgiven. Thank You, Jesus, for being our rest and our refuge. Amen.
