Spurgeon's Prayer: Drawing Near in Thanksgiving

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
— Hebrews 4:16 (BSB)

Prayer moves the arm that moves the world.
— Charles Spurgeon

Heavenly Father, we come before You today, longing to draw near. We thank You for Your Spirit, who draws us closer to You, and we come boldly through Christ, our Mediator. We know that we could never approach You on our own, but in Christ, we come with confidence to Your throne of grace. Our hearts are filled with thanksgiving, though our words cannot fully express the gratitude we feel.

Lord, You chose us before the foundation of the world, and from that wellspring of mercy, we receive endless streams of kindness. Because You chose us, we have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus. Bless the Lord! We have been called out of the world by Your Spirit, and now we belong to Your Divine Family. What a privilege to be Your children!

As we reflect on these blessings, our hearts can only say, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name." When we consider how unworthy we were before our conversion, and how flawed we still are, we marvel at the riches of Your grace. And when we think of the promises You have given us—secured by the covenant—we are overwhelmed. We long to make our praises as high as our expectations, and our expectations as high as Your promises.

Though we can never rise that high, we give You the praise of our entire being. To Jehovah, the Creator and Redeemer, be glory forever and ever. Let all His people praise Him. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those whom You have redeemed from the hand of the enemy. Amen.
