Spurgeon's Prayer: Humbling Ourselves Before God

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
— James 4:10 (BSB)

Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself.
— Charles Spurgeon

Lord, we come before You tonight in humility, acknowledging our sinfulness. Even though we have been renewed by Your sovereign grace, we confess that sin still plagues us daily. We cannot claim to be free from sin, for we know that we fall short of Your glory. But we humble ourselves before You, trusting in Your mercy and grace.

Father, we place our faith in the atoning blood of Jesus Christ. It is only through His sacrifice that we can come before You, and we cling to that hope. "I, the chief of sinners, am, but Jesus died for me." Let this truth be our anchor, our one hope of salvation. We know that in Christ, we are accepted, not because of anything we have done, but because of His perfect righteousness that covers us.

Tonight, we ask that You would cleanse our consciences from all dead works so that we may serve the living and true God. Let there be no barrier between us and You—not even the smallest mist of sin. We long to walk in the light, as You are in the light, and to have true fellowship with You. May our relationship with You be undeniable, filling our hearts with joy and peace.

Lord, take away anything that hinders our delight in You. May we come to You with a heart full of joy and simple, childlike faith, knowing that You are our Father. Let our fellowship with You and with Your Son, Jesus Christ, be our greatest treasure.

As we rest tonight, we place our trust in the finished work of Christ. May we sleep with the peace that comes from knowing we are forgiven, loved, and accepted by You. Amen.
