Spurgeon's Prayer: The Music of True Worship
God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
— John 4:24 (BSB)
It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.
— Charles Spurgeon
O blessed God, we bow before You, recognizing that without the help of Your Spirit, we cannot worship You as we should. The holy angels in heaven and the redeemed hosts bring their everlasting praises before Your throne. What are we—mere creatures of a day, tainted by sin—that we should think we can praise You? Yet, Your Word tells us that the music of praise is incomplete without the voices of Your children on earth. Help us, O Lord, to tune our hearts, that we may bring forth true worship from our spirits.
Lord, if there are any creatures on earth who should praise You, it is surely us. Each of us has special reasons to give thanks. What an indescribable mercy it is to know You—to know You as our reconciled God and Father in Christ Jesus, who has forgiven all our sins. Oh, the sweetness of resting in You, knowing that the conflict between us and You has been forever ended. Now, we are bound to You by a covenant of infinite tenderness and mercy, established by Your own hand, that we might find strong consolation in You.
O God, we thank You for the joy of knowing that we are Yours forever—Yours in life’s trials, Yours in death’s final hour, and Yours in the resurrection. We worship You, not out of compulsion or fear, but with glad and cheerful hearts, ascribing to You all power, glory, and honor. Help us to live our lives in constant worship, that every hour may be a testament to Your Gospel and Your grace. May the song of our lives be a sweet melody in Your ears, in harmony with the music of heaven. Amen.
