Spurgeon's Prayer: Confession and Forgiveness

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
— 1 John 1:9 (BSB)

Too many think lightly of sin, and therefore think lightly of the Savior.
— Charles Spurgeon

Father, with humility, we come before You, confessing our sins and transgressions. We know that we have not lived as we ought, and we grieve over the ways we have fallen short of Your holiness. We thank You for Your faithful promise that if we confess our sins, You are just and merciful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Lord, we ask for Your forgiveness, knowing that You are full of mercy and grace.

We also pray for those who have never felt the burden of their sin. Lord, lay the weight of sin upon their hearts, that they may come to understand their need for a Savior. Trouble their souls, Father, and let them find no rest until they rest in You. In Your infinite mercy, bring them to repentance, that they may experience the joy of forgiveness and new life in Christ.

As for Your people, we confess that we long to live better than we do. Though You have changed our hearts, and we now bear good fruit, we still yearn for more of Your holiness in our lives. We thank You for every fruit of faith and work of righteousness, but we ask for more. Make us more like Christ, and help us to bear even more fruit for Your glory.

Lord, we are grateful for the mercy You have shown us in leading us to repentance. May our hearts always be soft toward You, and may we never grow complacent in our walk with You. Thank You for Your grace, which continues to change and transform us. Amen.
