Spurgeon's Prayer: Bearing the Cross with Joy
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds,
— James 1:2 (BSB)
There are no crown-wearers in heaven who were not cross-bearers here below.
— Charles Spurgeon
Lord Jesus, we thank You for the example You set for us by carrying the cross and enduring its shame for our sake. You have called us to take up our cross and follow You, and we ask for the grace to do so with joy, even in the face of trials and difficulties. Help us to count it all joy when we encounter various trials, knowing that through these trials, You are glorified, and Your image is being stamped upon us.
Lord, we surrender our burdens to You. We know that we have burdens to carry, but we also know that You have invited us to roll those burdens onto You. You have promised that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. Help us to trust in You, to find comfort in Your presence, and to endure the trials of life with the peace that comes from knowing that You are with us.
Father, we also ask for the strength to persevere. When the road is difficult and the cross is heavy, remind us that Christ has already borne the ultimate burden on the cross, and because of His sacrifice, we can find comfort even in the midst of suffering. Let our trials draw us closer to You and mold us into the image of Your Son.
Help us to look beyond the present difficulties and see the eternal purpose You are working in us. May we find joy in knowing that our trials are not in vain but are shaping us into vessels fit for Your glory. Amen.
