Spurgeon's Prayer: Humility in Service

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves.
— Philippians 2:3 (BSB)

Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself.
— Charles Spurgeon

Father, we come before You, asking for humility in our hearts. We know that pride is a great hindrance to our walk with You. It blinds us to our own faults and causes us to look down on others. But You have called us to walk in humility, following the example of Christ, who humbled Himself even to the point of death on a cross.

Lord, take away from us any prideful, stiff-necked spirit. Remove from us the attitude that says, "I am holier than you." Help us to see ourselves rightly in light of Your holiness, recognizing that we are all in need of Your grace. May we associate with those of low estate, not thinking ourselves better than anyone else.

Help us, Father, to serve those who are in need. Let our hearts be filled with compassion for the poor, the broken, and the lost. May we seek out those who are struggling and offer them the love and support that we ourselves have received from You. Let our service to others be motivated by love, not by a desire for recognition or praise.

Lord, we also ask that You would guard us against spiritual pride. Keep us from thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought. Let us walk in humility before You, always aware of our dependence on Your grace. May we serve You with humble hearts, knowing that all we have and all we are comes from You. Amen.
