Spurgeon's Prayer: Freedom from Sin
For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
— Romans 6:14 (BSB)
If Christ has died for me, ungodly as I am, without strength as I am, then I can no longer live in sin.
— Charles Spurgeon
Father, we come before You, deeply aware of our need for deliverance from the power of sin. We know that we are not only forgiven but that You have promised to free us from the grip of sin in our lives. Lord, we cry out to You to deliver us from the temptations we face each day—from the sins that come from the world around us, but especially from the sin that remains within us.
Purify our hearts, minds, and actions, O Lord. We know that true holiness cannot be achieved without Your help. If it is necessary for us to go through trials and hardships to rid us of the impurities that still cling to us, we welcome the refining fire. Refine us as silver is refined, that we might be pure vessels for Your glory. Save us from our inherent sins, from the sins of temperament, and from the influences of our surroundings.
Lord, we cannot overcome sin on our own. We need Your strength and grace to live in the freedom You have provided through Christ. We thank You that sin shall no longer have dominion over us because we are under grace and not under the law. Let this truth sink deep into our hearts and transform the way we live.
Help us to daily put to death the sins that try to entangle us, and let us walk in the freedom that comes from knowing we are forgiven and redeemed. We look to You for the strength to live lives that honor You. Amen.
