Spurgeon's Prayer: Seeking Holiness
But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do,
— 1 Peter 1:15 (BSB)
Holiness is not the way to Christ. Christ is the way to holiness.
— Charles Spurgeon
Our Father, we bow in worship before You, acknowledging Your perfect holiness. There was a time when we loved You only for Your mercy, for that was all we understood. But now, You have changed our hearts, and we love You for Your goodness, purity, justice, and true holiness. We join the cry of the cherubim, "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts."
We adore You because You are holy and long for that same holiness in our own lives. We ask You to sanctify us completely—spirit, soul, and body. Lord, we mourn over the sins of our past and grieve our present shortcomings. Yet, we bless You for the forgiveness You have given us through the death of Your Son. Many of us know the joy of being cleansed by Christ, who takes away our sin. Now, we ask You to deliver us from the power of sin—both the temptations from outside and the sin that still dwells within us.
Purify our hearts, minds, and actions, Lord. If we must be refined in the fire to remove the impurities within us, we welcome Your refining process. Save us from ourselves—save us from our inherent sins, our temperaments, and the influences of our surroundings. May Your love burn brightly within us, and may we love You with all our hearts.
Let us also love others, recognizing that we are all members of one body in Christ. Let our love be active, not just in words but in deeds. Help us to show compassion, patience, and forgiveness, just as You have forgiven us. Lord, make us holy. Amen.
