But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams. — 1 Sam 15:22 BSB

Many people put more emphasis on religious rituals than on living out God’s commands in their daily lives. They faithfully attend church, reverently participate in worship, but during the week they live in ways that contradict God’s instructions. They might be selfish, prideful, or speak harshly, yet think their devotion in church services makes up for it.

But what God desires is obedience to His commands. Before our worship can be acceptable, we must live according to what He has instructed—loving one another, being patient, kind, honest, and true. No matter how devout our rituals may appear, they mean nothing to God if we don’t live in obedience.

God wants exact obedience, not something we think is better or more impressive. If a mother neglects her child to attend church, God isn’t pleased. If someone skips helping a needy family because they’re busy doing something more public and noticeable, God isn’t impressed. The most important thing in the Christian life is to obey God. Without obedience, nothing else matters. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
