So I have seen You in the sanctuary and beheld Your power and glory. — Ps 63:2 BSB
Every place becomes “a sanctuary” when God reveals Himself there in power and glory to the soul. Moses had likely passed by the bush at Horeb many times, seeing nothing special about it. It was just an ordinary bush, no different from the others around it. But on one sacred occasion, it was set aflame with the presence of God. The angel of the Lord appeared in a flame of fire, and though the bush burned, it wasn’t consumed. The ground around it became holy because God was there, and Moses was told to take off his shoes in reverence. In that moment, the ordinary bush became a sanctuary to Moses because it was filled with the presence of a holy God.
In the same way, any place where God makes His presence known becomes a sanctuary for the believer. It’s not about holy places made sacred by man’s ceremonies, but places made holy by God’s presence. A stable, a hedge, or a humble room can become a sanctuary when God fills our hearts with His sacred presence, awakening in us holy feelings and gracious affections.
If you’ve ever experienced this, then you have indeed seen God in His sanctuary. Your heart becomes His temple, just as Scripture says: “You are the temple of the living God; as God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them” (2 Corinthians 6:16). Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), and Christ dwells in our hearts by faith. So, it’s not just Christ outside of us, but Christ within us, where we see the power and glory of God. It is through this experience that we are consecrated to His service and glory, setting our hearts on heavenly things and tasting the joys of eternity.
