in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. — Col 2:3 BSB
How blind we are by nature! All the earthly wisdom and knowledge we possess can’t guide us into the truth of God. When the soul is truly under divine teaching, how ignorant we realize ourselves to be about everything we long to know! Darkness clouds our minds, and a veil of ignorance covers our hearts. Even the simplest truths of Scripture seem out of reach, and we struggle to see or feel any personal interest in them.
In this state, we don’t come to the Lord with empty words or pretend prayers, asking for wisdom just because we’ve heard others do so, or because we read in the Bible that Christ is made “wisdom” to His people. No, we come as helpless, ignorant fools, unable to understand any spiritual truth by ourselves. We are powerless to grasp the depths of true godliness, the mysteries of faith, or the heart of Christ.
What we need is divine illumination—light from God that allows us to truly see. We need spiritual wisdom that makes us “wise unto salvation.” This unction from the Holy Spirit is the only way we can know the truth and feel it applied to our souls.
