The First Miracle
Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. — John 2:11 BSB
The glory had always been there; it had been quietly present during the long years of Jesus’ humble life of work and service in Nazareth. But now, for the first time, it was revealed to others. This was the first time His divine splendor shone out before people. What’s important to notice is that this revelation of His glory took place during a simple act of kindness to help a troubled household. Jesus didn’t wait for a grand occasion to display His power—His first demonstration of divine glory was in this ordinary moment. It’s also worth noting that His glory was revealed during a time of celebration and joy. This shows us that the glory of Christ is rooted in love.
As we follow Jesus’ life, we see His glory shine more brightly, until it culminates at the cross, where He reveals the incredible love of God for the world. It’s no surprise that His disciples believed in Him after witnessing this miracle at Cana. It was a flash of divine light that broke through His humble appearance and performed a marvelous sign.
Before we leave this story of Jesus’ first miracle, we should see how the transformation of water into wine represents the entire work of Christ in the world. When we look at the impact of the gospel throughout history, we see the same glory shining everywhere and the same transformation happening again and again. Wherever the gospel goes, amazing changes take place. Deserts are transformed into gardens. Broken lives are touched and turned into something beautiful. Anyone who looks at the ongoing miracle of Christianity cannot deny the truth of Christ. No mere set of beliefs could produce such results. There’s a life in Christianity that brings transformation to everything it touches.
