For You have delivered my soul from death, and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. — Ps 56:13 BSB

You may have been delivered from death as much as David was, though not with the same full assurance of deliverance. God may have quickened your soul into spiritual life and communicated His grace to your heart, and yet you may still have many doubts and fears about whether it is a true work of grace in your soul. Not every child of God who has been delivered from death by regenerating grace can confidently say, “You have delivered my soul from death.” But when can they say this? When God blesses them with the assurance of His pardoning love, when Jesus is revealed to their heart, and His presence is felt with power in their soul. When the blood of Christ is applied to cleanse their conscience from guilt and dead works, and when the Spirit of adoption enables them to cry, “Abba, Father.” When they can clearly see their title to heaven through the witness of the Holy Spirit in their heart, and when they feel God’s presence and love flowing in their soul—at such moments, they can say with confidence, “You have delivered my soul from death.”
