Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. — Rom 8:5 BSB

Only those who have experienced a heavenly birth feel that heavenly realities are their true delight, that holy things are their sweetest meditation, and that the worship of God is their highest joy. This is a mark of divine life—a touchstone. For a person to be spiritually-minded, they must be spiritual, and to be spiritual, they must have received the Spirit and become partakers of that “kingdom of God which is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17).

Have you ever found, while reading the Scriptures, a sweet peace spreading over your soul as the glorious promises of God appeared one by one, like stars in the evening sky, each one brighter and clearer, until you felt a blessed assurance of your interest in them? Or, when at the throne of grace, enjoying freedom of spirit and access to your heavenly Friend, have you ever felt the peace of God drop into your heart, calming every rebellious feeling within you like oil upon the waves? Have you, in conversation with other saints, felt a sweet connection between heart and heart, soul and soul, and found that such conversation left behind a blessed fragrance on your spirit? Have you ever, in the house of prayer, had your heart and affections drawn up toward the things of God? As you listened to Christ being proclaimed—His person, His work, His grace, His glory—did your faith grow, your hope become anchored, and your love flow forth, causing you to experience a spiritual peace, a heavenly calm, and a holy rest that watered your soul like the river that flowed from Eden to water the garden?
