And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores — Luke 16:20 BSB
In this world, the rich man appeared to have the better life—he had wealth, luxury, and power, while the beggar had nothing, and no one seemed to care for him. The only friends the beggar had were the dogs.
But after death, their situations were reversed. The beggar died first, and though there was no grand funeral, he was carried by angels into a place of blessedness. The rich man also died, and while his funeral was full of pomp and splendor, he found himself in torment. He looked up and saw the beggar, now comforted and at peace, far above him.
The lesson is clear: it’s not what one has, but what one is, that counts with God. A poor person who loves God and faithfully does their duty is far richer than a millionaire who never thinks of God or cares for others.
