Of David. A Maskil. Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. — Ps 32:1 BSB

This beatitude doesn’t say, “Blessed is the sinless person,” but rather, “Blessed is the sinner who is forgiven.”

Unforgiven sin is like a heavy burden on a life. But once we are forgiven, we experience all the joy and peace that comes with it. We become God’s children, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, with the promise of eternal life.

God covers our sins, putting them out of sight forever—out of our sight, out of the world’s sight, and out of His sight. He says He will remember our sins no more. This covering is complete and final because it’s based on an atonement made by someone else.

Just forgetting that I owe a debt doesn’t make it disappear. But when someone else pays it for me, the debt is truly settled. “We all, like sheep, have gone astray… and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” If our sins were placed on Jesus, they are covered forever and will never be held against us.
