This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham: — Matt 1:1 BSB
At first glance, a chapter of names might not seem very interesting. We wouldn’t expect to find any spiritual value in a list like this. But there is something here that can teach us. For one thing, there is no missing link in this genealogy.
Another interesting point is that, although the line of descent passed through the chosen family, it included Gentile blood, as in the cases of Rahab and Ruth. So, we see that the Gentiles also had a share in the coming of the Messiah.
The name given to the Messiah—Jesus—shows us His purpose: “He will save His people from their sins.”
Another name given to the Messiah is Immanuel—God with us. The Incarnation means that God came down to live among us. Those who saw Jesus saw the Father. Even a chapter of names can hold great truths and important facts that have lasting significance.
