First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed all over the world. — Rom 1:8 BSB
Paul was an exemplary pastor.
First and foremost, he was completely devoted to Christ. He also loved people with a love that was remarkably similar to Christ’s. In his letters, he thanks God for the faith of his friends. He even calls on God to witness the sincerity of his care for them, as he constantly prays for them.
At the time, Paul’s heartfelt prayer was to be able to visit them in Rome. He longed to see them, and his reason for wanting to visit reveals his pure and lofty motive.
His desire was entirely unselfish—“that I may impart to you some spiritual gift.” This provides a high ideal for all friendships.
We should always want to bless our friends. Every time we meet them, we should aim to give them some encouragement, some comfort, or renew their courage.
