April 5

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. — Luke 24:1 BSB

They believed His body was still in the tomb and wanted to honor it. It was a beautiful gesture of love and respect for the departed. It’s fitting to place fragrant spices in a tomb, filling the space with their sweet aroma.

We still honor our loved ones today. Sometimes, though, we go to excess. Yet, the custom is too beautiful to abandon. Let our expressions of regard and affection be fitting.

But let’s not forget to give flowers while our friends are alive. It’s a poor expression of love to let hearts starve for kindness during life, only to send flowers for the coffin. How pleasant it is to remember that Mary broke her alabaster box to anoint Jesus before His burial.
