Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown. — John 4:44 BSB
Those who live close to great or good people are often the least likely to recognize their greatness.
Many of the people whose names are celebrated in history, whose work continues to shape the world, received little honor from the people around them during their lifetime. They might not even be honored today if they returned to live among us.
We often fail to appreciate the true worth of our best friends while they’re still with us.
It’s often not until a mother is gone from the home that her true value is recognized. The same is true for every family member and friend who means so much to us. Jesus walked among the people, teaching, performing miracles, and living out a life of love, but the people around Him failed to recognize Him as the Messiah.
“He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world didn’t know Him. He came to His own, and His own didn’t receive Him.”
