His mouth is most sweet; he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem. — Song 5:16 BSB
He is our Friend. Which of you has a friend at midnight? This question holds deep meaning for each of us. Who hasn’t had a friend, perhaps even closer than a father, at some point in life?
There are bonds that go beyond family ties, relationships that create the strongest and most enduring forms of love. Think of all the ways friends have stood by you, all the things you could trust them for, and the times they proved their loyalty. Then, gather up all those memories and feelings of friendship and place them on God. He is all that, and infinitely more.
Our Friend—God Himself—is personally invested in us. He has set His heart on us, drawn near to us with an intimacy beyond words, and made promises and pledges of unimaginable value. He has done so much for us and is always ready to go to any length to help us. When we come to Him in prayer, we approach our Heavenly Friend.
