He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him. — John 8:29 BSB

It is wise to keep short accounts with God. Years ago, I was struck by an interpretation of this verse: “So each of us shall give an account of ourselves to God.” The thought impressed on my mind was that we should give an account to God every day, so that our accounts are settled daily, and judgment is passed on us as we lay down to rest each night.

This is the true way to live. It is the secret of great peace. When life is closing or the Master is coming, it will be a great comfort to know that our account is already settled, and our judgment is behind us. Then, we will only be waiting for the glad words, “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord.”

Jesus, keep me closer, closer,
Step by step and day by day,
Stepping in Your very footprints,
Walking with You all the way.
