The Dew of Heaven

So Israel dwells securely; the fountain of Jacob lives untroubled in a land of grain and new wine, where even the heavens drip with dew. — Deut 33:28 BSB

What the dew in the East is to nature, the Holy Spirit is to grace. How much I need His influence! Without the Spirit of God, I am dry and withered. I droop, I fade, and I die. How sweetly does the Spirit refresh me! When He touches me, I feel happy, lively, and full of strength. I need nothing more. The Holy Spirit gives me life and everything my soul requires. Without Him, everything else is worthless to me. I can hear, read, pray, sing, and take Communion, but I find no blessing in any of it until the Holy Spirit comes. But when He visits me, every means of grace becomes sweet and full of benefit.

What a promise this is for me! “His heavens shall drop down dew.” I will be visited with grace. I won’t be left in my natural dryness, exposed to the world’s burning heat, or overwhelmed by Satan’s temptations. Oh, that I may feel the gentle, quiet, saturating dew of the Lord right now! Why shouldn’t I? The One who gave me life, just as the grass lives in the field, will surely care for me as He does the grass. He will refresh me from above. The grass can’t call for dew, but I can. Surely the Lord who visits even the unpraying plants will answer His pleading child.
