Rest in All Thy Goings

And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” — Exod 33:14 BSB

What a precious promise! Lord, help me make this promise my own.

Sometimes we have to leave our homes because we don't have a permanent city here. It often seems like when we feel most at home in a place, we suddenly have to leave it. But here is the remedy for that: the Lord Himself will go with us. His presence, which includes His favor, His fellowship, His care, and His power, will be with us in every step we take. This means more than it seems, for it means everything. If we have God with us, we have all of heaven and earth. Lord, go with me, and then take me wherever You want!

But we also hope for rest. This promise tells us we will find it. God will give us rest that comes from Him, created and sustained by Him. His presence will give us rest even as we are on the move, even in the midst of life’s battles. Rest! What a blessed word. Can we, as humans, truly experience it? Yes, we have this promise, and by faith, we claim it. Rest comes from the Holy Spirit, from the Prince of Peace, and from the glorious Father who rested on the seventh day after all His work. To be with God is to rest in the truest sense.
