Our Substance Blessed

Your basket and kneading bowl will be blessed. — Deut 28:5 BSB

Obedience brings a blessing on all the provisions our hard work earns for us. What comes in and is used immediately, like fruit in a basket for daily use, will be blessed; and what is stored for later use will also receive a blessing. Perhaps we only have a modest portion—just enough for breakfast and a small lunch packed in a basket for the day’s work. This is good because the blessing of God is promised to the basket. If we live day by day, receiving each day’s supply as it comes, we are no worse off than Israel was in the wilderness; for when the Lord fed His chosen people, He gave them only a day’s manna at a time. What more did they need? What more do we need?

But if we have more stored up, how much we need the Lord to bless it! For there is the care of acquiring, the care of keeping, the care of managing, and the care of using our resources; and unless the Lord blesses them, these cares will eat into our hearts until our goods become our gods and our worries become cankers.

O Lord, bless our resources. Help us to use them for Your glory. Keep us from letting worldly possessions take the wrong place in our lives, and may our savings never endanger the saving of our souls.
