Avoid That Slip

Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. — Prov 3:23 BSB

If we walk in the ways of wisdom and holiness, we will be preserved in them. Just as someone who travels by daylight on a well-marked highway is under some degree of protection, so too will we be kept safe if we devoutly follow our proper calling in life, walking in the fear of God. We may not travel in luxury, but we will walk safely. We may not be able to run like the young, but we can walk steadily and securely like the righteous.

Our greatest danger lies within ourselves: our weak and feeble feet are prone to stumble. Let us ask for more moral strength so that our tendency to slip may be overcome. Some stumble because they fail to see the obstacles in their path; divine grace enables us to recognize sin and avoid it. Let us plead this promise and trust in Him who upholds His chosen ones.

Alas, our worst peril is our own carelessness, but the Lord Jesus has warned us against this, saying, “Watch and pray.” Oh, for the grace to walk today without a single stumble! It’s not enough to avoid falling; our prayer should be that we don’t even make the smallest slip with our feet, and that we may ultimately praise Him “who is able to keep us from stumbling.”
