Back, Then Forward

But I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. — Ezek 16:60 BSB

Despite our sins, the Lord remains faithful in His love for us. He looks back and remembers those early days when He took us into covenant with Himself, and we gave ourselves to Him. Those were joyful days! The Lord doesn’t hold them against us or accuse us of being insincere. Instead, He looks to His covenant with us rather than to our failures. There was no falsehood in that sacred agreement—certainly not on His part. How gracious of the Lord to look back with love!

But He also looks forward. He is determined that the covenant will not fail. Even if we falter, He remains true. He declares, “I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.” He has no intention of backing out of His promises. Blessed be His name, He sees the seal of the covenant—the blood of Jesus—and He remembers our Surety, His own dear Son. Because of this, He remains faithful to His covenant. “He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”

O Lord, place this precious truth in my heart, and help me meditate on it all day long!
