Unstaggering Trustfulness

He does not fear bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. — Ps 112:7 BSB

Suspense is dreadful. When we have no news from home, we tend to become anxious, and it’s hard to believe that “no news is good news.” Faith is the remedy for this sadness; the Lord, by His Spirit, settles our minds in holy peace, and all fear is dispelled regarding both the future and the present.

The steadfastness of heart spoken of by the psalmist is something to strive for. It is not just believing this or that promise of the Lord, but having an overall condition of unwavering trust in our God, a confidence that He will neither harm us Himself nor allow anyone else to do so. This constant confidence meets the unknown as well as the known in life. Whatever tomorrow brings, our God is the God of tomorrow. Whatever events may have happened, which are unknown to us, Jehovah is the God of the unknown as well as the known. We are determined to trust the Lord, no matter what. Even if the worst should happen, our God is still the greatest and best. Therefore, we will not fear, even if the postman’s knock startles us or a telegram wakes us at midnight. The Lord lives, so what do His children have to fear?
