He Will Carry Us Home

Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. — Isa 46:4 BSB

The year is drawing to a close, and here is a promise for our older friends—yes, and for all of us, as we age. If we live long enough, we will all grow old, so we might as well enjoy this promise now, with eyes of faith.

As we age, our God will still be the great I AM, always the same. Gray hair may remind us that our strength is fading, but God never changes. When we can no longer carry heavy burdens or even ourselves, the Lord will carry us. Just as He carried us when we were young, like lambs in His arms, so will He carry us in our years of weakness.

He made us, and He will care for us. Even when we become a burden to others and perhaps even to ourselves, the Lord will not abandon us. Instead, He will carry us more tenderly than ever, providing for all our needs. Many of God’s servants experience a long, peaceful twilight after their years of hard work in His service, as if the Lord says to them, “Rest now and look forward to the eternal Sabbath I have prepared for you.” Let us not fear old age but grow old with grace, knowing that the Lord will always be with us, full of grace.
