Pruning for Fruit-Bearing
He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. — John 15:2 BSB
This is a comforting promise for those who live to bear fruit for the Lord. At first, it may seem harsh: must the fruitful branch be pruned? Must even the best and most useful parts of us endure the cutting? Certainly, this is true, for much of our Lord’s purifying work is done through various afflictions. It is not the wicked, but the righteous, who are promised trials in this life. Yet, the end more than makes up for the painful process. If pruning allows us to bring forth more fruit for our Lord, then we should welcome the cutting away of unnecessary branches.
Still, purging is often done through the Word, apart from affliction, and this softens the sharp edge of the promise. By His Word, we are made more gracious and more useful. The Lord, who has made us somewhat fruitful, will continue working on us until we reach an even higher level of productivity. Is this not a joyful thought? Indeed, the promise of fruitfulness brings more comfort than a guarantee of riches, health, or honor.
Lord Jesus, swiftly fulfill Your gracious promise to me, and cause me to abound in fruit for Your glory!
